What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum, similar to varicose veins. They can develop inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids). While they can be uncomfortable, hemorrhoids are a very common condition.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Several factors can contribute to the development of hemorrhoids:

  • Straining during bowel movements
  • Sitting for long periods on the toilet
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Pregnancy
  • Low-fiber diet
  • Obesity
  • Heavy lifting
  • Age (risk increases as you get older)

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms vary depending on the type of hemorrhoid:

Internal Hemorrhoids:

  • Painless bright red blood during bowel movements
  • Hemorrhoid that prolapses (pushes through the anal opening)

External Hemorrhoids:

  • Itching or irritation in the anal area
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Swelling around the anus
  • Bleeding

Treatment Options

Many hemorrhoid symptoms can be relieved with home treatments:

  • Sitz baths (sitting in warm water for 10-15 minutes)
  • Over-the-counter creams or suppositories
  • Ice packs to reduce swelling
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • High-fiber diet and increased water intake
  • Stool softeners

For more severe cases, medical procedures may be necessary:

  • Rubber band ligation
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Infrared coagulation
  • Surgical hemorrhoidectomy (for severe cases)

When to Seek Medical Care:

  • Bleeding that won't stop
  • Severe pain
  • A hard, painful lump near the anus
  • Rectal bleeding with dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Changes in bowel habits or stool color/consistency

Important: Never assume rectal bleeding is just from hemorrhoids. Other serious conditions, including colorectal cancer, can cause similar symptoms. Always consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis.

Prevention Tips

  • Eat a high-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains)
  • Stay hydrated (drink 6-8 glasses of water daily)
  • Exercise regularly
  • Don't strain during bowel movements
  • Don't sit on the toilet for long periods
  • Go to the bathroom when you feel the urge
